Downtown Redevelopment

Posted on May 25, 2014 Written by Rob Marlowe

One of the things I promised when running for mayor was that I would schedule more city council work sessions so that we can work through a number of issues facing the city in a more informal setting than a regular council meeting.

City Council has such a work session scheduled for Tuesday night.  There are two closely related items on the agenda:

A presentation on a proposed white water training facility that is being floated around will be made at Tuesday night’s city council meeting..   The discussion on how that might fit in our downtown should be interesting.  I’ve seen one proposed layout for such a facility, but in the interest of abiding by Florida’s Sunshine statute, I’ll refrain from expressing any opinion here on that layout and wait until Tuesday night’s meeting.

The second item is a more generalized discussion about what we want the downtown to be like in five or ten years.   This discussion ties in with work a group of students from FSU are doing for the county as the county works on it’s own plan for “The Harbors” (as it calls West Pasco).    This appears to be a “What do we want to be when we grow up.” type of discussion.  The city has had some of these visioning sessions in the past and I’m not quite sure where this particular discussion is going, but since it includes the county plans, it may prove interesting.

The good news is that there are potentially some funding sources that can be tapped to provide financing for whatever plans emerge out of Tuesday night’s meeting.

The meeting starts at 7:00pm and the public is invited.   Members of the public WILL have the opportunity to comment on both of these topics.  You can find the agenda materials on the city website at:  http://www.cityofnewportrichey.org/ArchiveCenter/ViewFile/Item/586

My Day Job

When I'm not doing mayor stuff, I spend my time at Gulfcoast Networking. I solve Internet issues, clean up infected computers, and build websites. I'm always happy to take a break from computers to talk about New Port Richey's future, so feel free to come by my office at 6335 Grand Blvd to chat.
