Pasco Rebuilds Together (and more)

There will be a fundraiser for Pasco Rebuilds Together’s Raise The Roof!”, this coming Saturday evening, March 12th, at the Verizon Center at the corner of Trouble Creek Road and Little Road from 5pm – 9pm.  The event itself is free, but you can expect to be encouraged to donate to the cause.  The event is designed to raise funds to help the folks who were flooded out this past summer get their homes and lives back in order.

The faith community has been very active in trying to help.  We’ve had Mennonite volunteers come from across the country and even Canada to help rebuild homes.  The United Methodist Committee on Relief set up shop at First Methodist of New Port Richey to assist in the efforts.  Catholic Charities, Baptist Disaster Relief, Samaritan’s Purse, and the United Way of Pasco County have also joined in the efforts.

So often, we see far away disasters on TV and it simply doesn’t register that disasters can and do happen closer to home.  They can happen here, they do happen here, and they did happen here last summer.  This event is an opportunity for us to reach out to our neighbors and lend a helping hand.

You can find more information about this effort in C.T. Bowen’s article.

I hope to see you Saturday evening at the Verizon Center.  Bring your wallet or your checkbook and support this very worthy cause.

Pasco Rebuilds Together is just one of a number of very worth local charity efforts that you can support this Spring.

The largest of these events is the Chasco Fiesta.  Our annual Chasco Fiesta provides a number of local non-profits the opportunity to raise money.  Chasco will run from April 1st through April 9th.  Come hungry each night and you won’t be disappointed.  The West Pasco Sertoma BBQ is always a highlight of the event for me.  Ditto the Gulf Shores Sertoma funnel cakes.  If your tastes run more toward “Black Tie” than Beef BBQ, you should consider attending the Lighthouse for the Blind’s Chasco Coronation Ball on Friday, April 1st.

Other notable fundraising events this spring include:

The One Commmunity Hunger Walk will be on March 12th at Gulf High School.  This is one of the pre-Chasco “Chasco” events this spring.

The annual Holiday Rotary Extravaganza will be in the Rotary Pavilion at the Concourse on SR 52 on Saturday, April 23rd.  This event invariably includes music, more food than you can possibly eat and a “countdown” raffle that sends one or more folks home with more money than they started with.

The Trinity Rotary Foundation will be holding a wine & craft beer tasting event, “Wine Down Wednesday”, in Sims Park on Wednesday, April 27th.  When then Mayor Scott McPherson talked us into allowing alcohol sales in Sims Park many years ago, this was exactly the sort of classy event he envisioned in the park.

The New Port Richey Relay for Life fundraiser to fight cancer and to honor survivors has moved this year to Sims Park and will be held on April 16th.

The West Pasco Pregnancy Center’s Walk for Life will be in Sims Park on April 30th.  The Center operates on a shoe string budget, helping women deal with the consequences of an unintended pregnancy.

A part of what makes New Port Richey such a great place to live is the way that we all come together as volunteers to help support our neighbors and so many worthy causes.
